Mumbai, March 5: The T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal-2 between India and England is set to take place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. The winning team will face New Zealand in the final on March 8. Ahead of this crucial match, former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan shared his insights on the players from both teams.
India’s 25-year-old opener, Abhishek Sharma, struggled in the initial three matches of the tournament, failing to score. However, he managed to score 15 runs against South Africa, 55 runs against Zimbabwe, and 10 runs against the West Indies.
Wassan believes that the pressure on Abhishek Sharma should be reduced to allow him to play naturally. He stated, “Abhishek Sharma does not need to change his aggressive style. The pressure on him should be lessened so he can showcase his natural game. Having Axar Patel in the lower order provides the team with a safety net.”
India faced a 76-run defeat against South Africa in the Super-8 match. However, the team bounced back, defeating Zimbabwe by 72 runs and the West Indies by 5 wickets to secure a spot in the semifinals. Wassan considers the loss to South Africa a “hidden blessing” for Team India, as it prepared them for the pressures of crucial matches.
Regarding the England team, Wassan remarked, “England looks quite balanced. Will Jacks is an emerging star who has performed excellently in the tournament. Comparatively, England’s spin department (Richard Dawson, Will Jacks, and Adil Rashid) appears more effective than the Indian attack. The performance of openers like Jos Buttler and Phil Salt will be crucial for England. The matchup between Jofra Archer and Sanju Samson will be interesting.”
Wassan regards Jasprit Bumrah as the “bank” of the Indian team. He emphasized that if Bumrah can break the initial partnerships, victory could become easier for India.
The match will be held at the Wankhede Stadium, which Wassan noted is a small ground where dew will play a significant role. The team winning the toss is likely to prefer bowling first.
Sanju Samson played a pivotal role in India’s victory against the West Indies in the Super-8 decisive match, scoring an unbeaten 97 runs. Wassan praised his performance, stating, “Sanju Samson’s display in the last match has been appreciated, which is a positive sign for the team.”
