Guwahati, March 8: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged voters to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), emphasizing the party’s ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment across the state. In a post on the social media platform X, he highlighted the transformative power of a single vote in changing families and amplifying women’s voices in society.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of public participation in the democratic process, stating that the right to vote can alter the voice of every household. Regarding the BJP’s approach to women’s empowerment, CM Sarma noted that the party’s policies in Assam have consistently aimed at strengthening women’s power. He asserted that the core objective of ‘BJP for Assam’ has been to empower women, a belief reflected in every action taken by the party.
According to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, the government will continue to work with renewed determination to benefit women through development programs and welfare initiatives in the coming years. He urged voters to make informed decisions in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that this effort will persist in the future. In his appeal before the assembly elections, Sarma encouraged voters to choose wisely and select the BJP.
Since coming to power, the BJP-led government in Assam has launched several women-centric welfare schemes aimed at enhancing financial security for women and promoting entrepreneurship across the state. One of the key initiatives, ‘Orunodoi,’ provides direct cash assistance of ₹1,250 per month to women from economically weaker families, currently benefiting over 1.9 million recipients.
This program aims to ensure that financial aid reaches families through women, thereby increasing their role in household decision-making and improving access to essential goods. Additionally, the government has initiated the Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurship Campaign (MMUA), which offers initial capital and institutional support to encourage rural women in entrepreneurship, targeting to benefit 1.2 million women.
Another initiative, the Lakshmi Baidev Scheme, aims to empower women associated with self-help groups (SHGs) by providing phased financial assistance. Women receive ₹10,000 in the first year, ₹25,000 in the second year, and ₹50,000 in the third year, enabling them to establish sustainable micro-enterprises and increase their income.
Political analysts believe that women voters are emerging as a significant electoral demographic in Assam, prompting major political parties to emphasize policies and electoral messages focused on women’s welfare and empowerment. The BJP leadership in the state has repeatedly highlighted the role of women in social and economic progress, with party leaders prominently showcasing government initiatives in their pre-election outreach campaigns.
