Assam Floods: Over 155,000 Affected as Death Toll Rises to 98

Guwahati, August 8: The flood situation in Assam remains critical as of Friday. More than 155,000 individuals across 13 districts have been impacted, with the death toll from this year’s floods increasing to 98, according to officials.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that 464 villages across 33 revenue circles in 13 districts are currently affected.

Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with 48,286 people affected. Following closely are Golaghat (58,750), Jorhat (25,259), Charaideo (12,779), Nagaon (5,424), Darrang (3,367), and Dhemaji (1,265). Approximately 10,748.64 hectares of farmland remain submerged.

ASDMA’s report indicates that 73 relief camps and distribution centers are operational in the affected districts, providing shelter and assistance to thousands of displaced individuals. Currently, 10,326 people are residing in relief camps, while 6,881 are receiving aid through distribution centers.

Officials noted that on Friday morning, the Dhansiri (South) River in Golaghat and the Kushiyara River in Srimanta were flowing above danger levels. However, no river has exceeded its highest flood level to date.

The disaster has also impacted livestock, with reports indicating that 47,879 animals have been affected. Additionally, 126 homes have been completely destroyed, and 344 have suffered partial damage.

Rescue and relief operations continue in the affected areas with the assistance of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil defense personnel, and other agencies.

According to reports, 219 rescue teams, eight boats, and several medical teams have been deployed. Essential supplies, including grains, drinking water, and food for children, are being distributed among the affected population.

Officials are closely monitoring the flood situation and have advised residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant, as water levels in several rivers continue to fluctuate.
