Guwahati, April 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday. He accused her of focusing more on criticizing political opponents than on governance in her speeches.
While addressing a public gathering in Cooch Behar district, Sarma stated that Banerjee frequently mentions Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, attempting to instill fear among the populace.
He remarked, “Her speeches emphasize attacks on PM Modi and Home Minister Shah rather than on developmental activities.”
Discussing the issue of delimitation, the Assam Chief Minister noted that if this process is implemented, it would significantly benefit the eastern states. He mentioned that states like Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam could see a notable increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats.
Sarma asserted, “If delimitation occurs, the eastern region will gain the most in terms of seats,” adding that it could improve the representation balance in favor of states with growing populations.
In response to Banerjee’s recent comments regarding dietary practices, Sarma stated that the issue is being unnecessarily politicized. He emphasized that consuming meat is common in various states, including Assam, Bengal, Gujarat, and Bihar, and should not be a subject of controversy.
He stated, “This should not be an issue unless people fear some kind of restriction.”
Reacting to allegations made by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee against the Election Commission, Sarma clarified that the transfer of officials is a normal administrative process and should not be made a contentious issue.
He added, “Transfers of officials also happen in Assam. We do not give it much importance, so there is no need to make it an issue.”
This political clash appears to intensify amid statements from leaders of the BJP and Trinamool Congress regarding governance, elections, and representation.
