Assam Chief Minister Urges Focus on Public Issues Over Jail Politics

Guwahati, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken aim at Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, emphasizing the need to prioritize public issues during election campaigns rather than discussing imprisonment. Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma responded to Gogoi’s recent remarks, stating that elections should focus on critical topics such as infrastructure, education, and government welfare programs.

“When elections come around, the focus should be on votes, not on jail,” Sarma remarked. He urged political leaders to engage with voters on subjects like roads, schools, colleges, and welfare schemes such as Orunodoi. He highlighted the difference between the concerns of jailed prisoners, who cannot vote, and the general public, who have the power to cast their ballots.

This statement comes just days before the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election scheduled for October 6. As political parties ramp up their campaigns, the rhetoric between them has intensified. Gogoi is a prominent figure in Assam’s Congress party, while Sarma is one of the key campaigners for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

During the 2026 Assam assembly election campaign, both leaders exchanged sharp comments on governance, welfare schemes, and political controversies. The latest remarks reflect the ongoing political rivalry in Assam, where various parties are striving to bring their issues of development, governance, and accountability to the forefront of electoral debates.

Voting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election will take place on October 6, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 9. As the election date approaches, the political exchanges between Sarma and Gogoi are expected to remain a central aspect of the electoral discussion.
