Itanagar, April 10: The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lieutenant General (Retired) K.T. Parnaik, commended the Indian Army’s contributions to the overall development of border areas. He stated that the Army’s ongoing efforts are strengthening inclusive development, community empowerment, and grassroots nation-building.
According to an official from Lok Bhawan, the Governor visited the ‘Border Brew Cafe’ located in the Tawang district’s Jemithang during the day.
He described this initiative as an inspiring example of community participation and entrepreneurship in border regions. The Governor emphasized that the Indian Army’s collaboration for the inclusive development of villages and settlements in border areas is fostering self-reliance and socio-economic progress among local residents.
He noted that such community efforts have the potential to transform remote border villages into vibrant economic centers while preserving cultural identity and social harmony.
Sharing his experiences, Lieutenant General Parnaik, who established ‘Cafe 1400 Feet’ in Nathu La, suggested increasing local youth participation in such initiatives. He recommended promoting traditional attire, developing local souvenirs, and creating special spots for photography to enhance tourist interest and better showcase regional identity.
Colonel Rohan Khisti, commanding officer of the 2 Maratha Light Infantry, mentioned that this cafe is operated by the ‘Bap Teng Kan Women’s Self-Help Group.’ He stated that this initiative was established by the 5 Mountain Division under ‘Operation Sadbhavana.’
This cafe represents a significant step towards providing sustainable livelihoods for local residents and promoting self-reliance. It also reflects the potential for grassroots economic development and community strengthening in strategically important border areas.
‘Operation Sadbhavana’ is a long-term civil assistance program of the Indian Army, primarily operating in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Under this initiative, activities such as education (Army Goodwill Schools), healthcare services (medical camps), infrastructure development (water, electricity, roads), and skill training for women and youth are conducted. The aim is to build trust among people and strengthen national integration.
