New Delhi, 9 December. Former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev, who led India to the 1983 World Cup victory, retired on 23 March 1994 with a record of 434 Test wickets for India. At that time, it was believed that Kapil Dev’s record would be very difficult to surpass. However, in cricket, every record is made to be broken eventually. Exactly ten years after Kapil Dev’s retirement, Anil Kumble broke this record.

The Indian team was on a tour of Bangladesh in 2004. The first Test match started on 10 December in Dhaka and ended on 13 December. India won the match by an innings and 140 runs.

This Test is remembered not only for India’s victory but also because Anil Kumble broke Kapil Dev’s record for most Test wickets. On the very first day of the Dhaka Test, Kumble took his 435th Test wicket by dismissing Mohammad Rafique. He took 2 wickets in the innings and 4 wickets in total in the match.

Anil Kumble achieved the 435-wicket milestone in his 91st Test, while Kapil Dev had taken 434 wickets in 131 Tests.

In the same Test, Irfan Pathan took 5 wickets in the first innings and 6 in the second innings. Pathan, with 11 wickets in the match, was named Player of the Match.

Anil Kumble retired from international cricket on 2 November 2008. He remains India’s highest wicket-taker in international cricket. Kumble leads as the top Indian bowler in both Test and One Day International (ODI) formats.

Kumble took 619 wickets in 132 Test matches and 337 wickets in 271 ODIs.

Combined across formats, Kumble ranks fourth in the world for most international wickets, after Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, and James Anderson. He is also fourth on the list of highest wicket-takers in Test cricket.
