Amit Shah Urges Manipur CM to Accelerate Peace Initiatives

New Delhi, April 1: Union Home Minister Amit Shah met with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday, urging him to expedite ongoing peace processes and strengthen goodwill among the state’s diverse communities.

An official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Imphal reported that during a meeting held at the Parliament House, Shah and Khemchand Singh discussed the current law and order situation in Manipur in detail.

Khemchand Singh traveled to New Delhi specifically for this meeting with the Union Home Minister on Tuesday evening.

The CMO official stated, “The Union Home Minister reviewed the current security scenario in Manipur with the Chief Minister. He instructed him to accelerate ongoing peace initiatives and further enhance the improving relationships among various communities.”

During the meeting, Shah also granted in-principle approval for the establishment of a unit of the Manipur Rifles (Women India Reserve Battalion) and requested the Chief Minister to submit a formal proposal regarding this matter.

Earlier, on February 22, Khemchand Singh, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and L. Sushil Kumar, had met with the Union Home Minister. They discussed several critical issues, including the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by ethnic violence.

According to the CMO official in Imphal, during that meeting, Home Minister Shah reviewed the steps taken by the newly formed state government to remove barriers between communities and restore peace and harmony. These discussions took place at the residence of the Union Home Minister in New Delhi.

The official further noted that since the BJP-led coalition government came to power in Manipur, the state administration has initiated various outreach programs aimed at promoting peace, reconciliation, and mutual trust among communities.

During the February meeting, Home Minister Shah assured Khemchand Singh and the Deputy Chief Ministers of the central government’s full cooperation in restoring normalcy in the state.

The official reiterated the central government’s commitment to providing all necessary support for the overall development and progress of Manipur. Shah emphasized the need to prioritize the rehabilitation of IDPs affected by ethnic violence and assured comprehensive assistance from the center in resolving this issue. This visit marks Khemchand Singh’s third trip to New Delhi since taking office on February 4.

During his previous visits to New Delhi, Khemchand Singh held separate meetings with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The main focus of these discussions was on the rehabilitation of IDPs affected by violence and the broader restoration of peace and stability in the state.
