Kuddalore, April 19: Ambumani Ramadas, the president of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), launched a fierce attack on the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its allies on Sunday. He accused them of sabotaging the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament, calling it the biggest betrayal against women.
During a press conference, Ambumani referenced the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in Parliament on April 17. This proposed legislation aimed to redistribute Lok Sabha seats based on the 2011 census, which would facilitate the implementation of women’s reservation, according to him.
He held the DMK responsible for blocking the bill, stating that the women of Tamil Nadu would never forgive the party. He compared this action to “female foeticide.” He also criticized Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for burning a copy of the bill in protest and demanded legal action against him.
Ambumani argued that if the bill had passed, women’s representation in the Tamil Nadu Assembly could have significantly increased. He claimed that by 2031, the state could have around 20 women MPs and 117 women MLAs out of 59 seats.
Questioning the DMK’s stance, he asked why the Chief Minister opposed a 50% increase in parliamentary constituencies nationwide. Citing statements from Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, the PMK leader asserted that Tamil Nadu would benefit from an increase in Lok Sabha seats, similar to northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
He further alleged that while concerns about women’s safety in Tamil Nadu persist, the DMK is opposing measures to enhance their political participation. Ambumani accused the Chief Minister of making personal attacks instead of highlighting the government’s achievements.
