Lucknow, August 26: The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is heating up over the Yogi Adityanath government’s decision to privatize the Jay Prakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC), a flagship project of former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
During a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the proposal to lease JPNIC in Gomti Nagar to private companies for 30 years was approved.
Following this decision, Akhilesh Yadav launched a sharp critique against the BJP government, labeling the move as a step towards handing over government responsibilities to private entities.
According to the cabinet’s resolution, JPNIC will be leased to Rockwood Hotels and Resorts Private Limited and Vrindavan Bottlers Private Limited for a period of 30 years. This ambitious project, developed during the Samajwadi Party’s tenure, includes a museum, auditorium, sports complex, and multi-level parking, among other facilities. The push for private sector involvement in the operation and completion of JPNIC has been ongoing for some time. With the cabinet’s approval, the path for its privatization is now clear.
Akhilesh Yadav took to the social media platform ‘X’ to express his discontent with the government’s decision. He questioned, “Is the BJP government a government or a shopkeeper? The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to hand over JPNIC in Lucknow to private hands. Soon, it will only be left to give the government itself on contract or sell it.”
He further added, “The ‘commission’ is the fuel for the corrupt BJP’s vehicle, and ‘privatization’ is its arrangement.”
