Guwahati, May 12: A historic day unfolded in Assam’s political landscape on Tuesday as Himanta Biswa Sarma took the oath of office as Chief Minister for the second consecutive term. Alongside him, four other legislators assumed ministerial responsibilities, but the name generating the most buzz is Ajanta Niyog.
Ajanta Niyog stands out as the only female minister in the new cabinet and is regarded as one of the most experienced female leaders in Assam’s politics. She has once again demonstrated her political strength by winning the Golaghat assembly seat for the sixth consecutive time. Initially a member of the Congress party, she switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2020. Despite the party change, her popularity remained intact, leading to a remarkable victory in the 2026 elections following her success in 2021.
Niyog’s role in the new government is particularly significant as she previously served as the state’s finance minister, making her Assam’s first female finance minister. Her extensive administrative experience and strong political connections position her as a key figure in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s team.
Born in 1964 in Guwahati, Ajanta Niyog hails from a prominent political family. Her mother, Reboti Das, was also a legislator representing the Jalukbari assembly constituency, and her husband has been involved in politics as well. Growing up in a politically active environment, Ajanta has achieved remarkable success in education, earning MA, LLB, and LLM degrees from Gauhati University. After completing her studies, she began practicing law at the Guwahati High Court and established herself as a successful advocate.
Her political journey began in 2001 when she was first elected as a legislator from the Golaghat assembly seat. Since then, she has never looked back, winning consecutive elections in 2006, 2011, and 2016 as a Congress candidate. The 2011 election was particularly significant for her, as she won by a substantial margin of over 46,000 votes.
Her decision to leave Congress and join the BJP in 2020 was seen as a major shift in Assam’s political dynamics. Many believe her entry into the BJP strengthened the party’s female leadership and organizational structure in the state. After winning on a BJP ticket in 2021, she proved that public trust in her leadership remains strong.
With her sixth consecutive victory in 2026 and a return to ministerial responsibilities, Ajanta Niyog’s political stature has significantly increased.
