Guwahati, April 22: The hearing in the case related to the renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg is ongoing in a fast-track court. Meanwhile, the wife of one of the accused stated on Wednesday that her husband has been wrongfully implicated and remains in jail despite his innocence.
Anita Deka, the wife of Shyamkanu Mahanta, spoke to the media, expressing her confidence that the truth will emerge through the judicial process. Mahanta is an organizer of the Northeast Festival and is also among the accused in this case.
Emphasizing her husband’s innocence, Deka claimed that Mahanta has been imprisoned for the past seven months without any wrongdoing. “An innocent person is being punished. There should be fair justice in this case,” she asserted.
“My husband is innocent. He has been in jail for seven months without any fault. We believe that the court will deliver justice,” Deka added.
She also mentioned that Mahanta has worked extensively to promote Assam and showcase the culture of the Northeast on a larger platform. Deka alleged that her husband has been falsely implicated in this matter.
This case is linked to the death of the famous singer Zubeen Garg. He was scheduled to perform at the Northeast Festival in Singapore but tragically passed away on September 19 last year while swimming in the sea.
Currently, the case is under judicial consideration, with hearings continuing in the fast-track court.
The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team filed a detailed charge sheet in December 2025 in the Guwahati court regarding this case.
The investigation began following Garg’s mysterious death on September 19, 2025, during his participation in the Northeast India Festival in Singapore.
The charge sheet is reported to be extensive, containing between 3,500 to over 12,000 pages, including investigations and witness statements.
Seven individuals have been named as accused in this charge sheet. Four of them, including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, band member Shekharjyoti Goswami, and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta, face murder charges.
Garg’s cousin and suspended Assam police officer Sandipan Garg has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Other accused, including Garg’s personal security officer, face charges of criminal conspiracy and betrayal.
The SIT’s charge sheet was prepared based on statements from over 300 individuals, documentary evidence, and forensic investigations. Meanwhile, a Singapore court recently ruled out any conspiracy in Zubeen Garg’s death, stating that it was due to drowning.
