Abhishek Sharma Shines with Explosive Half-Century in T20 World Cup Final

Ahmedabad, March 9: Abhishek Sharma entered the T20 World Cup 2026 final with just 89 runs from seven innings, raising doubts about his form and inviting criticism. However, he silenced his critics with a remarkable performance against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium.

From the outset, Abhishek displayed exceptional rhythm. After receiving a reprieve early in his innings, he capitalized on the opportunity, unleashing a flurry of boundaries. The left-handed batsman reached his half-century in just 18 balls, finishing with a dazzling 52 runs off 21 balls. His innings featured an impressive strike rate of 247, including six fours and three sixes.

Partnering with Sanju Samson, Abhishek provided India with a blazing start. The duo propelled the team’s score past 50 runs in just four overs, making them the first opening pair to achieve a 50-run partnership in a T20 World Cup final. Additionally, they set a record for the highest runs scored in the powerplay in T20 World Cup history, amassing 92 runs together.

India also set a record for the fastest 100 runs in a knockout match during the final, reaching the milestone in just 7.2 overs against New Zealand. This surpassed the previous record held by New Zealand, who had completed 100 runs in 7.5 overs during their semifinal against South Africa.

In the final, New Zealand’s captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Indian team maintained their playing eleven without any changes, while New Zealand included Jacob Duffy in place of Cole McConchie.
