Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Narender Reddy File Nominations for Rajya Sabha from Telangana

Hyderabad, March 5: Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy submitted their nominations on Thursday as candidates from the Congress Party for two Rajya Sabha seats from Telangana.

On the last day for filing nominations ahead of the elections scheduled for March 16, Singhvi and Reddy presented their nomination papers to Returning Officer Upendra Reddy at the Telangana Assembly. The process was overseen by Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu. Notable attendees included Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Mahesh Kumar Goud, ministers, Congress MPs, MLAs, and other leaders.

The top leadership of Congress has nominated Singhvi for a second term from Telangana, while Narender Reddy is contesting for the first time for the upper house of Parliament. Reddy is a close associate and advisor to Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The party leadership overlooked several senior leaders to nominate him as the second candidate.

Singhvi, a Supreme Court lawyer, was widely expected to be chosen for a second term due to his legal expertise and significant presence in Parliament, which is deemed crucial for the party at the national level. The terms of Singhvi and K.R. Suresh Reddy will end on April 9, prompting these elections. Suresh Reddy currently leads the BRS parliamentary party.

As the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has not announced any plans to contest the elections, the likelihood of Singhvi and Narender Reddy being elected unopposed is high.

It is noteworthy that the Congress holds a sufficient majority in the Telangana Assembly to secure both seats. The 119-member assembly includes 66 Congress MLAs, one from its ally, the Communist Party of India (CPI), and seven from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Officially, the BRS has 37 MLAs, but 10 of them have decided to join Congress in 2024. The BJP has eight MLAs.
