New Delhi, August 10: TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has received significant relief from the Supreme Court. On Monday, the court granted him conditional permission to travel abroad for eye treatment. The Supreme Court has allowed Banerjee to undergo treatment for three weeks in September.
The court clarified that Banerjee must provide a detailed itinerary of his travel, including flight information, accommodation details, and the name of the hospital or doctor where he will receive treatment. The court emphasized that every citizen has the right to travel abroad and seek medical care of their choice.
Banerjee’s legal team argued that he has already participated in the investigation and is willing to comply with necessary conditions during his trip abroad. Considering these circumstances, the court granted him permission for the three-week journey in September.
Recently, the Calcutta High Court had denied him permission, advising him to first consult specialists at Kolkata’s government SSKM Hospital. The High Court noted that while considering treatment options for Banerjee, it must also take into account the ongoing criminal cases against him.
Banerjee had refused to appear before the medical board, which led to the rejection of his petition. The High Court stated, “Given the applicant’s lawyer’s argument that he (Abhishek Banerjee) would not appear before the medical board as directed by the court, the court believes that the issues raised in the petition should not be delayed any further. Therefore, the current petition is dismissed.”
