Abhishek Banerjee Criticizes BJPs Push for Uniform Civil Code in West Bengal

Kolkata, April 16: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, launched a strong attack on the BJP’s promise to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in West Bengal. He stated that this move would undermine the state’s diversity.

Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah mentioned that if the BJP forms a government in West Bengal, the UCC would be enacted within six months.

In response, Banerjee addressed a rally in Gopiballavpur, Jhargram district, stating, “The UCC will dictate how people practice their religion. The BJP wants to interfere in people’s lives.”

He emphasized that every individual is unique, saying, “Everyone has different clothing, preferences, and needs. Can one rule apply to all?”

Banerjee claimed that the implementation of the UCC would primarily affect Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and the Kurmi community. He warned that marginalized groups could face significant harm.

He expressed concerns that such a law could damage people’s cultural and social customs.

Meanwhile, Banerjee openly challenged Amit Shah, stating at the rally, “I tell Amit Shah to be present in Kolkata on May 4. I will meet him after 12 PM.”

He added, “This time, not just Rabindra Sangeet will play, but also DJ music. We will respond in the language you understand.”

Banerjee also noted that while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is calm and generous, he knows how to respond differently. He cautioned against misinterpreting humility as weakness.

He concluded, “The humility of the Trinamool Congress does not signify weakness. Those who have insulted us by calling us infiltrators or Rohingyas are mistaken. We know how to respond appropriately.”
