AAP Calls for Protest at Jantar Mantar Demanding Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 2, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Party leaders are urging citizens, especially the youth, to join the movement in large numbers. They allege that there are serious concerns regarding the electoral process and voter lists, emphasizing the need to protect the right to vote.

Manish Sisodia, former Deputy Chief Minister and senior AAP leader, accused Gyanesh Kumar of facilitating vote manipulation for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He stated that questions are being raised about the right to vote, warning that if these issues are not addressed, other civil rights could also be endangered. Sisodia called on the public to gather at Jantar Mantar on October 2 to demand Kumar’s resignation.

“This movement is about safeguarding democratic rights and the right to vote,” he said. Sanjay Singh, an AAP member of the Rajya Sabha, raised concerns about the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list, claiming that it resulted in the removal of over 13 million names. He described this as a serious issue that could undermine the electoral process and insisted that the Election Commission must be held accountable.

Saurabh Bhardwaj, AAP’s Delhi state president, expressed confidence that a significant turnout of Gen Z and various organizations would join the protest. He stressed that elections and voting play a crucial role in holding governments accountable. Bhardwaj warned that if any government believes it can manipulate the electoral process to maintain power, accountability to the public could weaken. He also criticized the government over issues like corruption, unemployment, and law and order.

Bhardwaj urged demonstrators to keep the protest peaceful and suggested that anyone attempting to incite chaos should be reported to the police. AAP leader Atishi highlighted that the right to vote is a cornerstone of democracy in independent India. She accused the BJP of trying to undermine this right through the Chief Election Commissioner and encouraged people to arrive at Jantar Mantar at 10 AM on October 2 to stand up for their voting rights.

Opposition leader in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Ankush Narang, questioned the Election Commission’s integrity, alleging it operates under pressure from the BJP government. He noted that if there are doubts about the electoral process, public trust in democracy is jeopardized. Narang confirmed that AAP workers and supporters would gather peacefully at Jantar Mantar at 10 AM to demand Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
