
Mathura, March 22: The Chhata police in Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested 15 alleged rioters for blocking National Highway-19, attacking police officers, and vandalizing vehicles following the death of a cow protector in a road accident. Officials reported this on Sunday.
According to police, the incident occurred on March 21 at around 11:30 AM when 58-year-old Chandrashekhar (known as Farsa Wale Baba), a resident of Ajanauj village under the Barsana police station, died in a road accident in the Kosi Kalan area.
Immediately after the accident, a crowd gathered and blocked NH-19 by placing the body on the road, causing severe traffic disruption. The protest quickly escalated into violence, with the crowd allegedly opening fire, throwing stones at police officers and members of cow protector groups, and damaging police vehicles.
Police officials stated that the situation deteriorated rapidly, creating panic in the area and causing significant inconvenience to travelers. Additional forces were dispatched to control the situation and clear the highway.
The Chhata police acted swiftly, launching a coordinated operation that led to the arrest of 15 individuals involved in the violence. The arrests were made on Sunday in the Shergarh Tiraha area.
During the operation, police recovered several items used in the incident, including sticks, bricks, stones, and illegal homemade cartridges of .315 and .312 bore.
A case has been registered at the Chhata police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rioting, attempted murder, obstruction of public ways, and damage to public property. The accused are being presented in court for further legal action.
Police officials confirmed that the situation is now under control. They also warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt law and order.
Authorities have reiterated their appeal to the public to maintain peace and resolve grievances through legal means.
