Thiruvananthapuram, August 4: Kerala has taken a crucial formal step towards establishing an independent AYUSH university. This initiative is expected to invigorate academic activities in the coming days and enhance enthusiasm in research and innovation.
On Tuesday, Health and Devaswom Minister K. Muraleedharan announced the formation of a four-member committee tasked with drafting proposals for the proposed university. The panel is expected to submit its draft regarding the Kerala AYUSH University within two months.
This proposed university aims to unify all AYUSH educational institutions currently affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences under one roof.
The university is envisioned as a specialized institution to coordinate academic programs, clinical training, research, drug development, and policy initiatives across recognized AYUSH streams, including Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha, and Unani.
The minister described this move as a historic step towards strengthening Kerala’s traditional health system. He stated that the university will create an integrated academic framework that meets international needs in teaching and research.
The university’s headquarters will be established at the fundamental research school for Ayurveda located in Tripunithura.
In addition to drafting legislation, the committee will examine governance structures, academic frameworks, research priorities, and administrative systems before making recommendations. The committee will be chaired by the Principal Secretary of the AYUSH department, with the State Mission Director of the National AYUSH Mission serving as the coordinator.
Other members include the Director of Ayurvedic Medical Education and the Principal of the Government Homeopathic Medical College.
The university is expected to strengthen interdisciplinary research, improve the quality of AYUSH education, and expand opportunities for clinical studies and medicinal innovations.
Kerala is already recognized as a major center for Ayurveda. The proposed university is anticipated to bolster the state’s position as a national hub for traditional medicine and enhance global recognition of India’s indigenous healthcare systems.
