New Delhi, April 19: Women athletes participating in the ‘Sunday on Cycle’ event in New Delhi shared their thoughts on the recent failure of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha.
Wrestler Geeta Phogat expressed her disappointment in an interview with a news agency, stating, “It saddens us that this bill did not pass in Parliament. I hope that if not today, then tomorrow, this bill will certainly be passed, promoting women’s empowerment.”
Judo player Priya Sharma emphasized the importance of women raising their voices, saying, “I will say this plainly: women must always stand up for themselves, whether in Parliament or elsewhere.”
Boxer Sweety Boora remarked, “It is very unfortunate that the opposition is opposing this bill. We only asked for 33 percent reservation, while women’s participation in voting is 50 percent. Despite being half the population, the opposition is reluctant to grant even 33 percent reservation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to empower women, which is why he proposed this bill. I want to thank PM Modi for thinking so much about women.”
Meanwhile, Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal, who attended an event in Banka, Bihar, expressed her hopes for the bill’s passage. She noted that she was present in Parliament on the day the bill was discussed. “Daughters of the country are excelling in every field. It would have been great if political participation was ensured. I hope this bill will pass in the future.”
It is noteworthy that the opposition defeated the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill through voting in the Lok Sabha, leading to political tensions. While the opposition accuses the government of using the bill as a pretext for redistricting, PM Modi and senior BJP leaders have labeled Congress and the opposition as anti-women.
