New Delhi, April 6: Former Indian marathon runner and sports activist Sunita Godara has hailed the Women’s Reservation Bill as a historic milestone, expressing gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government.
In an interview, Godara stated, “If the Women’s Reservation Bill is passed, it will mark a historic moment. The challenge lies in the fact that all parties must agree when a bill is presented in Parliament. I hope all parties will come together to pass this bill, as it will empower women. Their voices will be heard more, and their issues will receive better solutions.”
Godara emphasized, “Women are now excelling in sports. The passage of this bill will increase women’s participation in politics. With more women, especially female athletes, in politics, they will naturally consider sports and understand its nuances, challenges, and benefits. This will help improve the sports sector. That is my hope and vision. Let’s see what happens, but if this bill is passed, it will indeed be a historic moment.”
Thanking Prime Minister Modi, she added, “By introducing 33% reservation, you are truly honoring women’s power and respect. It will be a significant moment.”
Discussions on important bills related to amendments in the Women’s Reservation Law are scheduled for April 16, 17, and 18. Currently, there are 543 seats in the Lok Sabha. With the proposed increase of 50%, the number of seats will rise to 816, with approximately one-third (273 seats) reserved for women.
The government introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill during a special session of Parliament in 2023. This bill is officially titled the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.’
