Kolkata, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata’s political landscape is stirring as Humayun Kabir, the founder of the Aam Janata Udyog Party (AJUP) and a legislator from Nauda, has been summoned by police for questioning related to an alleged audio clip. Kabir is expected to appear at the Baharampur police station on Monday, September 21, at 11 AM.
On Saturday afternoon, police officers from Baharampur visited Kabir’s residence in Murshidabad district, but he was not home at the time. The police served the summons to his son, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who signed for the notice as the AJUP candidate for the upcoming Rejinagar by-election.
The case revolves around an audio recording purportedly capturing a telephone conversation between Kabir and another individual, which recently went viral on social media. The authenticity of the audio clip has not been independently verified. Allegations suggest that the recording contains incendiary remarks made by Kabir.
Authorities have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The notice states that Kabir must cooperate with the investigating officer, Ravindranath Biswas, or face legal repercussions under Section 208 of the IPC.
Reacting to the summons, Kabir stated, “I was not at home when the police came. I learned they had left a notice. This has happened before. It is an attempt to intimidate voters.” He expressed his intent to meet with the investigating officer at an appropriate time and respond to all inquiries.
Kabir described the situation as a conspiracy, claiming, “I was set up through a phone call. I have emailed the Superintendent of Police requesting a fair investigation into this matter.”
Notably, the Rejinagar constituency is set for a by-election on October 6. Kabir had previously won both the Rejinagar and Nauda seats but vacated the Rejinagar seat, leading to the upcoming election.
