Wang Yi Meets UK PM’s National Security Adviser Ahead of Starmer’s China Visit

Beijing: Wang Yi, member of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau and director of the Foreign Affairs Commission Office of the Chinese government, held talks with Jonathan Powell, the National Security Adviser to the British Prime Minister.

Wang Yi announced that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to visit China, marking the first official visit by a British Prime Minister to China in eight years.

As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, both China and the United Kingdom share critical responsibilities in maintaining global peace and development. In the current complex and turbulent international environment, Wang Yi emphasized the need for both countries to adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, jointly address challenges, and uphold the international order with the UN at its core.

Jonathan Powell acknowledged China’s position as the world’s second-largest economy and a major global power. He noted that the lack of high-level exchanges between the UK and China in recent years has not served the interests of the peoples of both nations.

Powell expressed hope that Prime Minister Starmer’s visit would provide an opportunity to enhance dialogue and cooperation between the UK and China at all levels and sectors, fostering a more consistent and comprehensive strategic partnership. He expressed confidence that the visit would be fully successful through combined efforts.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern, including the Ukraine crisis.
