Voter Turnout at 17.68% in Assams Nagaon Lok Sabha By-Election

Guwahati, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Voting for the by-election in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha seat is currently taking place, with 17.68% of voters casting their ballots by 9 AM on October 6. Polling began at 7 AM across 2,112 polling stations, and approximately 1.9 million voters are eligible to participate.

Voters from both urban and rural areas are arriving at polling stations, and the election process is proceeding peacefully. This contest features three main candidates: Debashish Sharma from the BJP, Sibamoni Bora from Congress, and Badruddin Ajmal from the AIUDF.

BJP candidate Debashish Sharma cast his vote at Mayong Higher Secondary School and expressed his emotions afterward. He urged voters to actively participate in the democratic process, emphasizing the importance of voting to strengthen democracy.

Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora voted at Jajori Majgaon, expressing confidence in his victory and stating that he expects support from both minority and majority communities.

Several prominent leaders also voted on Tuesday morning. Ramakant Deuri, an MLA from Morigaon, voted at Deobaguri Primary School, while Nurul Huda, an MLA from Rupohihaat, voted at Roumari Maktab School.

Voting briefly halted at Booth Number 72 in East Siddhabari, Morigaon district, due to a malfunctioning electronic voting machine. Officials reported that the machine experienced technical issues after five votes were cast, but it was repaired, allowing voting to resume.

This by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi on March 20, who left the party to join the BJP. He subsequently contested and won the Assam Assembly election from the Dispur seat, leaving the Nagaon seat vacant.

The Nagaon constituency has been under Congress control since 2019, when Pradyut Bordoloi narrowly defeated BJP’s Rupak Sharma. In that election, Congress secured 49.53% of the votes compared to BJP’s 48.41%. In 2024, Bordoloi won with 51.29% of the votes, defeating BJP’s Suresh Bora, who received 5,76,619 votes, marking a victory margin of over 2.12 lakh votes.
