Violence Erupts in Imphal Rally; 21 Arrested Amid Unrest

Imphal, April 20: Unrest has once again gripped Manipur. During a rally in the capital, Imphal, police arrested 21 individuals for inciting violence. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend others involved.

On April 18, a torch rally was held on the Imphal-Jiribam road, organized by various civil society groups. The event escalated into chaos as the crowd turned violent, throwing stones at police officers and launching petrol bombs. Several people sustained injuries during the clash, and government vehicles were vandalized. Three personnel from the CRPF’s 232nd Battalion were severely injured in the incident. Authorities managed to disperse the crowd and restore order.

The Manipur police have confirmed the arrest of 21 individuals. Among those detained are Sanjeev (36) from Sagolband Salam Leikai, Bonanza Takhelchangbam (28) from Tera Loukrakpam Leirak, Rahul Khetrimayum (27) from Uripok Khwai Brahmapur Leikai, and others.

Additionally, on the same day, in Ukhrul district, unidentified armed assailants shot and killed two Naga civilians amid ethnic tensions. The incident occurred on the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2) as vehicles were en route to Ukhrul. The deceased have been identified as Chinaoshang Shokhvuangao (45) and Yaruingam Washum (42).
