Uttar Pradesh to Develop Policy for Safe Use of AI in Universities
Uttar Pradesh plans to create a policy for the responsible use of AI in universities, aiming for completion in three months.

Kanpur, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : The government of Uttar Pradesh is set to formulate a policy for the safe and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its universities. This initiative follows the proposal from Governor Anandiben Patel, leading to the establishment of an AI Policy Advisory Committee. The committee includes Vice Chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Prof. Vinay Kumar Pathak. Its primary goal is to provide clear guidelines on the use of AI in educational institutions, alongside new technologies and future strategies.
Prof. Pathak emphasized the governor’s vision of AI playing a crucial role in advancing the nation. A team of experts has been assembled to draft this policy. The committee, comprising four members, aims to complete the AI policy within the next three months. This policy will clarify the applications of AI technology across universities and the potential services it can offer.
He stated that the strategy should evolve from mere discussion to actionable plans. Currently, CSJM University has ongoing projects in AI, which will be accelerated. The university will continuously develop new AI tools and programs, adapting to emerging needs.
Regarding the outreach of AI to rural areas, Prof. Pathak highlighted the necessity of preparing these regions for “AI readiness.” He mentioned the university’s AI hackathon, which aims to equip students with skills to develop AI-based solutions. Initially, students will receive training in AI technologies, enabling them to create models and services tailored to local needs. The goal is to develop AI tools that directly benefit farmers, laborers, and the underprivileged.
Prof. Pathak pointed out that the true benefits of AI will only be realized when the technology addresses the challenges faced by diverse societal groups, rather than being confined to urban centers.
On the benefits and potential drawbacks of AI, he noted that it has become a necessity in today’s world. There is no need for unnecessary fear regarding the technology, but ethical considerations and human values must take precedence in its application. Responsible and value-driven use of AI is essential, as any new technology carries risks of misuse.
Addressing the increasing use of AI in election campaigns and its potential for misuse, Prof. Pathak remarked that the advent of new technologies has continually transformed political and social discourse. From newspapers to television, the internet, and now AI, each medium has changed the landscape of communication. He anticipates that as technology evolves, its use in discussions and campaigns will grow. This underscores the need for responsible use and awareness of AI.
Prof. Pathak reiterated that the AI Policy Advisory Committee is working diligently to finalize the policy within three months. The policy will encompass topics such as the use of AI in universities, technical services, student preparedness, and community-oriented AI solutions. He concluded by stating that universities should not only adopt technology but also prepare students to develop innovations that benefit a broader segment of society.
