Lucknow, March 23: A cabinet meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took place on Monday at Lok Bhawan. Out of 37 proposals presented, the cabinet approved 35. A significant decision regarding wheat procurement was also made during this meeting.
Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi provided detailed information to reporters following the cabinet meeting. He announced that the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat for the Rabi marketing year 2026-27 has been set at ₹2,585 per quintal, reflecting an increase of ₹160 per quintal compared to last year.
Wheat procurement will begin on March 30, following Ram Navami, and will continue until June 15. The minister stated that a total of 6,500 procurement centers will be established by eight agencies, including the marketing branch of the food department. These centers will operate from 9 AM to 6 PM. Instructions have been issued to ensure that farmers have access to shade, water, and seating at these centers.
The agriculture minister added that farmers will receive an additional ₹20 per quintal for unloading, cleaning, and sorting their produce. This year, farmers have cultivated a good crop in the state, and the agriculture department has provided them with sufficient seeds. It is essential to ensure ample procurement to prevent any losses for the farmers.
He also mentioned that the food and logistics department initially set a procurement target of 3 million metric tons, but Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed an increase to 5 million metric tons. The Chief Minister has instructed that payments to farmers be made within 48 hours through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). To eliminate the interference of middlemen, the entire system has been digitized. So far, nearly 200,000 farmers have registered for wheat sales, with 195,628 registrations completed by Monday afternoon.
