New Delhi, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The controversy surrounding the “370 rupee biryani” has escalated to the Supreme Court. Comedian Pranit More has filed a petition requesting the consolidation of various FIRs lodged against him in different states. The Supreme Court has issued notices to the central government as well as the governments of Maharashtra and Haryana, seeking their responses.
During the hearing, a lawyer representing More argued that the allegations in the separate FIRs are nearly identical, warranting a unified hearing. He emphasized that More has publicly apologized for the incident and is prepared to face trial. The contentious video that sparked the uproar was removed prior to the FIRs being filed, as More’s PR team did not obtain his approval before posting it on social media.
The controversy originated from a stand-up show in Gurugram, where an audience member, Himanshu Jangra, shared an experience from a date. He recounted spending approximately 370 rupees on chicken biryani and made a remark deemed highly offensive towards women. In a viral clip, Jangra suggested that his financial expenditure warranted sexual favors, and when the woman asked him to leave, he referenced “getting his money’s worth.”
In the video, Pranit More was seen laughing at Jangra’s comments, branding them as “peak Gurugram content.” Critics have accused More of trivializing serious issues rather than addressing them with the gravity they deserve. The National Commission for Women took note of the situation, summoning both More and Jangra and urging the Director General of Police in Haryana to take action. The Commission stated that the remarks made in the viral video trivialized serious matters such as consent and coercion against women, leading the Gurugram police to file an FIR.
In response to the growing backlash, Maharashtra’s cyber police also filed an FIR against More, Jangra, and another individual. The situation escalated across state lines, prompting More to approach the Supreme Court for relief. Following the uproar, More issued an apology on social media, admitting he should have intervened during the conversation but got swept up in the audience’s reaction. Meanwhile, Jangra lost his job as a consequence of the incident.
