UP Warriors Captain Lauds Team Spirit After Back-to-Back Wins

New Mumbai, January 17: UP Warriors captain Meg Lanning expressed her happiness over the team’s growing confidence and strategic performance following their second consecutive victory in the Women’s Premier League. The team defeated Mumbai Indians, handing them their second straight loss. Lanning was also named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance. She described the win as a significant morale booster after a challenging start to the tournament.

Strong Comeback Despite Early Setbacks

Reflecting on the team changes, Lanning acknowledged the tough beginning with three initial losses but praised the Warriors for maintaining a positive mindset. She said, “This was a good comeback game for us. Losing the first three matches was not ideal, but the entire team stayed motivated. We believed in our abilities and just needed to put in more effort.”

The Warriors set a strong batting tone, led by Lanning herself who scored 70 runs off 45 balls. This innings made her the first player in the Women’s Premier League history to record 11 half-centuries. Despite opener Kiran Navgire’s early dismissal, Lanning found a reliable partner in Australian teammate Phoebe Litchfield. Together, they forged a crucial 119-run partnership.

Strategic Planning and Teamwork Pay Off

Lanning praised the team’s preparation and clear strategy, which she credited for their back-to-back wins. “We planned extensively and discussed how to execute our plans. The opposition had some quality batters, so a clear strategy was essential. I believe in the last two games, we implemented it well,” she said.

She also emphasized that the hard work done off the field reflected positively on the game. “We had clarity on what needed to be done, and it was encouraging to see that the effort outside the field translated into success on it.”

Building Partnerships and Looking Ahead

Lanning highlighted her growing understanding with Phoebe Litchfield, praising the young batter for easing the pressure through aggressive play. “Batting with Phoebe is great. We play different shots and understand each other’s game well, supporting each other when needed. Her strike rate relieved a lot of pressure from me,” she added.

Despite posting a good score, Lanning admitted that the team could have finished their innings better, noting that Mumbai’s bowling was strong and slowed the pace. She stressed the need to adjust and maintain momentum in the second innings.

The Warriors also showcased collective bowling strength that restricted Mumbai Indians and secured the win. Lanning said the team’s bowling efforts were crucial and would remain important going forward. “We have improved in some areas, but it’s good that there is still room for growth,” she concluded, underscoring that the team is not complacent.
