New Delhi, May 10: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the announced three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, along with the proposed prisoner exchange.

Guterres expressed his support on X, stating, “I welcome the announcement of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia and the plan for a large-scale prisoner exchange. I appreciate the efforts of the United States in facilitating this agreement and fully support its implementation. I reiterate my call for an immediate, complete, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire to take the first step towards a just, sustainable, and comprehensive peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.”

Additionally, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric reiterated the Secretary-General’s appeal for an immediate, complete, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire to advance towards a fair, sustainable, and comprehensive peace.

On Friday, Russia and Ukraine agreed to implement a ceasefire from Saturday to Monday and to exchange “one thousand for one thousand” prisoners.

This announcement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated that an agreement had been reached for a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. He described it as a significant step towards ending the long-standing conflict.

Trump stated, “I am pleased to announce that there will be a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine on May 9, 10, and 11.”

He noted that this ceasefire would coincide with Russia’s ‘Victory Day’ celebrations. Trump emphasized that Ukraine also played a significant role in World War II, making this day important for them as well.

According to Trump, under this agreement, all military actions between the two countries will be paused temporarily, with fighting and attacks ceasing during this period.

He also mentioned that both nations have agreed to exchange prisoners, with each side releasing 1,000 prisoners.
