UN Chief Welcomes Ceasefire and Prisoner Exchange Between Ukraine and Russia

New Delhi, May 10: The United Nations has welcomed a three-day ceasefire and planned prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, expressed support for this development.

In a statement, Dujarric reiterated Guterres’ call for an immediate, complete, and unconditional ceasefire as a crucial step towards achieving a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a ceasefire from Saturday to Monday, along with a “thousand-for-thousand” prisoner exchange.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has been agreed upon, which he described as a potential step towards ending the long-standing conflict.

Trump stated, “I am pleased to announce that there will be a three-day ceasefire (May 9, 10, and 11) in the war between Russia and Ukraine.” He noted that the ceasefire coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations while acknowledging Ukraine’s significant role in World War II.

According to Trump, the agreement includes halting active military operations, with all types of military activities suspended during the ceasefire. Both sides have also agreed to exchange a substantial number of prisoners, with 1,000 prisoners to be swapped between the two nations.

He expressed gratitude to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for agreeing to the terms.
