The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a fresh directive urging all parents and schools to ensure that children update their Aadhaar biometrics on time. Bhuvnesh Kumar, CEO of UIDAI, has sent a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories, instructing them to organize camps in schools for completing the pending biometric updates of children’s Aadhaar as soon as possible. This step has been taken to prevent any difficulties for children in accessing government schemes in the future.

Why Aadhaar Update is Necessary for Children Aged 5 to 15 Years

UIDAI has clarified that children must update their Aadhaar biometrics at the age of 5 and again at 15. The reason is that children’s fingerprints and iris patterns change at these ages. If these updates are not done on time, the data recorded in Aadhaar becomes outdated, causing verification problems. Accurate and reliable biometric data is necessary for successful authentication.

Pending Aadhaar Updates for 17 Crore Children

According to recent reports, the Aadhaar biometric update is pending for nearly 17 crore children across the country. Without timely updates, these children could face difficulties in the future. To address this, UIDAI has launched a new initiative to speed up the process.

Biometric Update Made Easy in Schools

UIDAI, in partnership with the Department of School Education and Literacy, has introduced a new facility. Now, using the UDISE+ application, schools can identify which students need mandatory biometric updates. This will help schools efficiently complete the process and ensure timely Aadhaar updates for millions of students.

Consequences of Not Updating Aadhaar Biometric

Failure to update Aadhaar biometrics on time can cause several problems for children, including:

  1. Issues in availing government schemes such as scholarships and financial benefits.

  2. Difficulty in registration and verification for competitive exams like NEET, JEE, and CUET.

  3. Problems in identity verification due to outdated biometric data.

  4. The risk of facing long queues and delays later if the update is not done in time.

UIDAI’s Appeal to State Governments

The UIDAI chief has appealed to all states and union territories to set up special camps in schools for this work. He mentioned that UIDAI and the School Education Department have developed a special solution through the UDISE+ app to support this drive. This initiative is aimed at ensuring that no child misses out on opportunities due to a lack of updated Aadhaar documents.
