U.S. Strengthens Ties with India Amid Rising Tensions in West Asia

Washington, March 3: The United States is sending two senior officials to India this week, underscoring the importance it places on India amid escalating tensions in West Asia.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau will be in New Delhi from March 3 to 6. He will lead the U.S. delegation at the 2026 Raisina Dialogue, which the State Department describes as India’s premier geopolitical forum.

During his visit, Landau aims to advance President Trump’s America First policy priorities. He plans to meet with senior Indian officials, with discussions expected to cover bilateral cooperation in defense, critical minerals, and combating narcotics.

Both sides will also work to deepen commercial and economic ties for American businesses and promote a shared vision for a free, open, and traditional Indo-Pacific region.

This visit comes at a time of increasing tensions in West Asia, placing all discussions about India in a broader regional context. Additionally, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs S. Paul Kapoor is in New Delhi from March 1 to 3.

According to the U.S. Embassy, Kapoor is engaging with Indian officials to discuss “regional security and shared priorities in the Indo-Pacific.” The embassy noted that his visit is part of an initiative to advance Trump’s vision for a strong and mutually beneficial U.S.-India partnership.

The Raisina Dialogue has become India’s flagship strategic forum, attracting global leaders, ministers, and security experts each year. The presence of U.S. officials highlights India’s growing significance in Indo-Pacific calculations.

Over the past decade, India and the U.S. have enhanced their defense and strategic cooperation, signing key agreements and increasing coordination in the Indo-Pacific.

Cooperation will also encompass critical minerals, new technologies, and energy security, areas expected to be focal points in this week’s discussions in New Delhi.
