Washington, April 8: Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire, calling it a monumental day for global peace.
He stated that Iran is now exhausted from the ongoing conflict and desires peace, allowing Tehran to initiate its reconstruction process.
In a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump mentioned that the U.S. will assist in managing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. He also confirmed that American troops would remain in the region to ensure everything proceeds smoothly.
In his post, Trump wrote, “This is a significant day for world peace. They have endured a lot. The U.S. will provide all necessary support and remain present to stabilize the situation. I am confident that everything will be fine. Just as we are witnessing a ‘Golden Age’ in America, this could mark a new era for the Middle East.”
Previously, Trump had backed away from a potential large-scale military strike against Iran, declaring a two-week temporary halt on the condition that Iran fully, safely, and promptly opens the Strait of Hormuz. This announcement has brought considerable relief globally.
Reports indicate that this decision was made just 90 minutes before the 8 PM (EST) deadline set by Trump, with behind-the-scenes diplomacy playing a crucial role. Trump noted that a ceasefire was established following discussions with Pakistan.
He claimed that the U.S. has achieved its military objectives and is now making swift progress towards a long-term peace agreement with Iran. According to Trump, Iran has presented a ten-point proposal, which serves as a solid foundation for negotiations.
He stated that consensus has been reached on most contentious issues, and the two-week period will be critical for finalizing the agreement. However, he clarified that this ceasefire is entirely conditional and depends on Iran’s actions regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, Saeed Abbas Araghchi indicated that if attacks on Iran cease, its forces will also halt their operations. He mentioned that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be permitted for two weeks, but coordination with Iranian armed forces will be essential.
It is noteworthy that tensions had escalated significantly prior to this announcement. Trump had warned that failure to reach an agreement could lead to the end of civilization. Thus, this ceasefire emerges as a beacon of hope on a global scale.
