Washington, May 22: President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will send an additional 5,000 U.S. troops to Poland.
In a statement on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump expressed his support for Polish President Karol Nawrocki, stating, “In light of President Nawrocki’s successful victory and our strong relationship, I am pleased to announce that the United States will deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. I take pride in supporting the President.”
According to reports from the Xinhua news agency, this announcement comes just a week after the Pentagon unexpectedly postponed the planned deployment of over 4,000 U.S.-based soldiers to Poland. Nawrocki was elected President of Poland last year.
U.S. media reports indicate that approximately 80,000 American troops are currently stationed in Europe, with around 10,000 of them in Poland.
Previously, the Pentagon announced that about 5,000 U.S. troops would be withdrawn from Germany within the next 6 to 12 months.
Meanwhile, when the Pentagon canceled the temporary deployment of troops to Poland, the head of U.S. European Command was instructed to “reduce the number of soldiers.” This information was shared by Acting Chief of Staff of the Army Christopher LaNeve during a congressional hearing last week.
LaNeve mentioned the “Second Armored Brigade Combat Team,” stating, “I discussed with them which unit should be reduced, and it was decided that the deployment of that brigade would not proceed at this time.”
He also noted that some parts of the unit had already been sent abroad, and military equipment was en route.
The order to cancel the deployment reportedly came from the office of U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. However, no official announcement has been made regarding this matter.
