Washington, May 9: President Donald Trump has announced that a three-day ceasefire has been agreed upon between Russia and Ukraine. He described this as a significant step towards ending the long-standing conflict.
In a statement, Trump expressed his satisfaction, saying, “I am pleased to announce that there will be a ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine on May 9, 10, and 11.”
He noted that this ceasefire coincides with Russia’s “Victory Day” celebrations. Trump emphasized Ukraine’s substantial role in World War II, stating, “Victory Day is celebrated in Russia, but Ukraine also made significant contributions, making this day important for them as well.”
According to Trump, the agreement entails a temporary halt to all military actions between the two nations. He assured that fighting and attacks would cease during this period.
Additionally, he mentioned that both countries have agreed to exchange prisoners. Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine will release 1,000 prisoners each.
The U.S. President revealed that he initiated this initiative personally, saying, “I made this request directly.” He praised both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for agreeing to the terms of the deal.
Trump remarked, “I greatly appreciate President Putin and President Zelensky for their agreement to this deal.” He characterized this development as a significant turning point in the war, expressing hope that it marks the beginning of the end for this long, dangerous, and destructive conflict.
He added, “Negotiations continue to end this major conflict, which is the largest since World War II, and we are getting closer to a resolution with each passing day.”
If fully implemented, this ceasefire would be one of the largest pauses in fighting since the war began. Previous attempts at temporary ceasefires have often failed to last.
This announcement comes at a time when both nations are under increasing pressure to find a resolution through dialogue, even as fighting continues in several areas.
Victory Day, celebrated on May 9 in Russia, is a crucial national holiday commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Ukraine also remembers the legacy of this war, although in recent years, it has sought to distance itself from Soviet symbols.
