Kathua, August 10: The Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme has significantly changed the fortunes of small farmers in the Sarthal Valley of Jammu and Kashmir. With direct financial assistance deposited into their accounts, farmers in the valley are now cultivating potatoes and vegetables, supplying not only local markets but also reaching markets in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
Farmers in Sarthal Valley have shared that previously, raising funds for seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation was their biggest challenge. Timely disbursements from the PM Kisan scheme have enabled them to invest in farming without incurring debt. This has led to increased production and higher income.
Pritam Singh, a farmer from the Bani tehsil, expressed his gratitude, stating, “First of all, I want to thank the Prime Minister for sending the PM Kisan funds to our accounts. This is very beneficial for small farmers like us. We have cultivated potatoes in Sarthal, and we are supplying them throughout Jammu and Kashmir, as well as to Punjab.”
He noted that the funds from the scheme allowed him to purchase quality seeds and fertilizers. Additionally, he received technical guidance from the agriculture department, resulting in significantly improved yields. Now, his produce is reaching not only local markets but also neighboring states.
The Sarthal Valley is a hilly region where farmers previously grew crops primarily for their families. However, with the support of the PM Kisan scheme, many farmers have transitioned to commercial vegetable production. Potatoes, peas, cauliflower, and other seasonal vegetables have become the region’s hallmark.
Farmers report that receiving ₹2,000 every four months is a substantial relief. This money helps cover tractor rentals, labor costs, and transportation expenses, ensuring that their crops reach the market on time, minimizing losses.
Pritam Singh has also urged other small farmers to take agriculture seriously. He stated, “I appeal to other small farmers to focus on farming, as it can yield good income. We are using quality seeds provided by the agriculture department, and we are seeing better yields. Once again, I express my gratitude to the Prime Minister for this assistance.”
Officials from the agriculture department are pleased to witness the changes in Sarthal Valley. They mentioned that alongside the PM Kisan scheme, the government is also providing seeds and training, helping farmers adopt new technologies.
