Tragic Suicide of Female Doctor in Bhopal Sparks NHRC Notice to Health Department

Bhopal, March 5: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the police and health department following the tragic suicide of a female doctor at AIIMS Bhopal. This information was shared by NHRC member Priyank Kanungo.

Kanungo revealed on the social media platform ‘X’ that the assistant professor, Srishti, allegedly took her own life due to the harassment and humiliation inflicted by the Head of Department, Dr. Parvez. Reports indicate that she overdosed on medication to end her suffering.

According to the complaint, despite the doctor facing harassment from Dr. Parvez on three separate occasions and filing complaints, the hospital management failed to take action and attempted to suppress the matter. Ultimately, the female doctor succumbed to her distress.

Kanungo emphasized the seriousness of the complaint and stated that notices have been sent to Bhopal police, AIIMS Bhopal management, and the Ministry of Health for an investigation. All parties have been instructed to submit a report on their findings.

In his post, Kanungo expressed condolences to the victim’s family, stating, “The suicide of a promising doctor is deeply saddening. We will ensure that justice is served and improvements are made within the system.”

This incident is not isolated; another female doctor at AIIMS Bhopal, Dr. Rashmi Verma, also took her life previously. On December 11, she was found unconscious in her hostel room, with a weak pulse and heartbeat. Reports suggest she had overdosed on anesthetic injections. She was admitted to the hospital that night but tragically passed away 25 days later.

A suicide note was recovered from the scene, in which Dr. Verma took responsibility for her death.
