Tragic Hotel Fire in Kolkata Claims Nine Lives, BJP Leader Questions Fire Safety Measures

Kolkata, August 19: A devastating fire at the Shikha Inn hotel in Kolkata has resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, with several others injured. During the rescue operation, approximately 80 people were safely evacuated. The incident created chaos in the area, prompting local authorities to initiate relief and rescue efforts.

BJP leader Bhola Sonkar raised serious concerns regarding the safety measures in place at the hotel and surrounding buildings. He noted that this area falls under Ward Number 52 on Mirza Ghalib Street, where multiple guesthouses operate within a single structure across various floors.

Sonkar highlighted that many nearby buildings also host guesthouses on different levels. He pointed out the lack of adequate fire-fighting and safety measures in these establishments. Many guests, particularly those from Bangladesh seeking medical treatment, frequently stay in these places.

The BJP leader questioned the documentation and safety arrangements for residents in these guesthouses. He emphasized the necessity for hotel and guesthouse operators to adhere to safety standards to protect lives in emergencies. Minister Agnimitra Paul took the incident seriously, stating that hotels and guesthouses failing to meet safety regulations would be identified and penalized. Inspections should ensure that all essential safety measures, including fire safety, are in place.

Expressing sorrow over the fatalities, Paul remarked that the loss of any life, regardless of caste or religion, is profoundly tragic. The priority must be to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the safety of lives and property. Sonkar also criticized the previous government’s approach, claiming that adequate attention has not been given to safety measures in such establishments over the decades. He accused various governments of prioritizing political interests over public safety.

Following the incident, the government and relevant ministers have acknowledged the situation. Several leaders visited the site to assess the circumstances. An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire and identify lapses in safety measures. Based on the findings, accountability will be established, and necessary steps will be taken to prevent future occurrences.
