Srinagar, August 19: The Jammu and Kashmir police have registered a case against a leader of the BJP Kisan Morcha in Pulwama district. Officials reported on Wednesday that a case has been filed against Ejaz Ahmad Shah for fraud and criminal threats.
According to authorities, the case against Ejaz Ahmad Shah was registered at the Tral police station under Sections 420 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They noted that the alleged crime occurred in 2022, which is why it falls under the IPC, prior to its replacement by the Indian Justice Code (BNS) in July 2024.
The complainant alleges that Ejaz Ahmad Shah took money from him under the pretense of securing police assistance in a case.
Ejaz Ahmad Shah was appointed as the vice president of the Pulwama Kisan Morcha last November. He has faced at least eight similar cases registered across four police stations in the district since 2016. This marks the third case filed against him this year.
Earlier, on August 11, an FIR was lodged against Shaukat Gayoor, the BJP’s Pulwama district president, for alleged extortion and threats. Subsequently, the BJP suspended Gayoor from all positions pending disciplinary action.
The police have also filed cases against several other political leaders and activists for extortion and fraud, primarily involving promises to secure government jobs and assistance from police and local authorities. In nearly all these cases, the accused misused their political affiliations to make false promises.
Numerous dishonest activists linked to various political parties have been accused of extorting money from parents of youths detained by security forces in connection with terrorism-related inquiries.
