Bhubaneswar, March 16: A devastating fire broke out at SCB Medical College in Cuttack, Odisha, on Monday, resulting in the tragic deaths of ten patients. President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences over the incident. She took to social media platform X to convey her deep sorrow regarding the loss of life and property in the horrific blaze at the hospital. She extended her heartfelt sympathies to the affected families and wished for the swift recovery of the injured.

Upon learning of the incident, Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi arrived at the scene. He reported that the fire erupted in the trauma care center of SCB Medical College, affecting the trauma ICU, adjacent ICU, and a ward on the first floor where 23 patients were being treated. Seven patients died at the scene, while three others succumbed to their injuries after being transferred to the hospital. The Chief Minister expressed profound grief over the tragedy.

Ashwathi S., Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department, stated that their primary responsibility is to care for the people. She mentioned that they have instructed their doctors to provide adequate support to the victims. Currently, they are focused on the medical ICU.

A relative of one of the patients recounted her experience, saying, “My daughter was being treated in the ICU. I was waiting outside when I asked my daughter-in-law to go inside. A woman inside the ICU called out loudly in Hindi. I couldn’t understand her well as my home is in Angul. At first, I thought someone was in trouble, but after a while, I saw the ICU room filled with smoke.”
