Chennai, February 27: Indian cricket team’s young batsman Tilak Varma faced criticism for his slow batting in the T20 World Cup 2026. However, he silenced his critics with a stunning performance against Zimbabwe on Thursday.
In the match, Tilak was sent to bat at number six instead of his usual third position. The left-handed batsman scored an unbeaten 44 runs off just 16 balls, hitting 4 sixes and 3 fours. His explosive innings not only propelled India to a total of 256 but also boosted his confidence and earned the trust of the team management.
After the match, Tilak stated, “When the openers provide a good start, it gives confidence to numbers 3, 4, and 5 as well. Sanju Samson had a fantastic start, and everyone followed suit. Even after losing three or four wickets in the powerplay, we wanted to maintain aggressive batting. We aimed to instill fear in the opposing bowlers, making them aware that we were ready to hit every ball.”
He added, “We discussed before the game that we would approach it with a positive mindset. We reviewed our T20 cricket from last year and watched old videos that helped boost our confidence. As a team, we decided to put in our full strength.”
Regarding his batting order and approach, Tilak remarked, “I always say that I am ready for whatever the team needs. I have played this role for the Mumbai Indians as well. My goal has been to hit sixes and fours right after a wicket falls.”
Tilak concluded, “We played the same cricket that we have been playing since last year. We want to maintain that intent in the next game as well. We aim to surpass the 250-run mark in upcoming matches.”
