Nestled in the heart of Rajasthan’s desert, the Cloud Palace stands as a testament to India’s rich heritage. Perched atop the Aravalli hills, this royal retreat offers breathtaking views of the majestic Taragarh Fort on one side and the serene waters of Nawal Sagar Lake on the other.
Constructed in the 17th century, the Cloud Palace served as a haven for the rulers of Bundi. Its name, “Cloud Palace,” is fitting, as it often appears shrouded in mist and clouds, creating an ethereal ambiance.
The story of the palace’s construction is equally fascinating. It was commissioned by Rao Ratan Singh, a patron of art and culture, in the 17th century. Unlike other palaces built for administrative purposes, the Cloud Palace was specifically designed for the royal family’s relaxation and comfort. Rao Ratan Singh envisioned a peaceful and secure retreat for his family atop the hill, and this stunning palace was the realization of that dream.
Due to its elevation in the Aravalli range, the palace frequently experiences fog and clouds, enhancing its magical atmosphere. One of its most striking features is the expansive terrace, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. From here, visitors can admire the beauty of Taragarh Fort, Nawal Sagar Lake, and the nearby hills. The royal family often celebrated festivals and sought solace in this enchanting location.
The Cloud Palace is a remarkable example of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Visitors can marvel at the intricate carvings, lattice work, and vibrant frescoes that adorn its walls. Access to the palace is through a veranda on the southern wall, and it is divided into five sections. The lowest section is devoid of paintings, while the second showcases a series of 36 Ragamala paintings, crafted in Bundi’s distinctive style. The third section depicts historical scenes, featuring a 23-meter-long strip illustrating Rao Ratan Singh and his family engaged in activities like elephant fights, hunting, polo, and processions.
In the fourth section, Rao Ratan Singh is portrayed with European guests, esteemed personalities, and the literary figure Madhav. One notable painting captures him receiving a small artwork from an artist in the court, with the Cloud Palace depicted in the background, providing a glimpse into the palace’s 17th-century charm. The uppermost section features a grand dome surrounded by smaller domes, adorned with beautiful depictions of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu.
The frescoes of the Cloud Palace elevate Bundi’s painting style to new heights. These artworks later influenced the Kota School of Painting and are renowned for their vibrancy and freshness.
