The Importance of Mindfulness in Yoga: Achieving Mental Balance and Inner Peace
Yoga offers more than physical exercise; it cultivates mental health through practices like concentration and meditation.

New Delhi, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : Yoga is often perceived merely as a form of physical exercise or a series of postures. However, it encompasses practices that promote both physical and mental well-being. In yoga, concentration, known as “Dharana,” plays a crucial role. This practice involves focusing the mind on a single object, thought, or subject. Our minds tend to wander, often dwelling on past events or worrying about the future, making it challenging to concentrate. Dharana helps to direct this wandering mind towards a specific focus, such as the flame of a candle, a point between the eyebrows, or an image of a deity. With consistent practice, one’s ability to maintain focus can significantly improve.
Meditation, or “Dhyana,” takes this concept a step further. While Dharana aims to concentrate the mind on a single subject, Dhyana involves a continuous and uninterrupted flow of consciousness towards that subject. Initially, one might need to repeatedly bring the mind back to the focal point, but as concentration deepens, the mind can achieve a state of sustained attention, known as Dhyana. This state is considered a natural progression from Dharana.
Both Dharana and Dhyana are interconnected. Dharana prepares the mind for concentration, while Dhyana deepens and sustains that focus. To practice these techniques, one can start by sitting in a quiet place, focusing on the breath or a chosen object. If the mind wanders, rather than becoming frustrated, gently redirect it back to the chosen focus. Regular practice can aid in calming the mind and enhancing concentration.
