These appear as light or dark lines on the abdomen, thighs, hips, and sometimes around the breasts. While they are not harmful, they can cause concern and discomfort for many women.
As the abdomen expands during pregnancy, the skin stretches rapidly. When the inner layers of the skin cannot fully cope with this stretching, small marks form, known as stretch marks. Initially, these may appear pink or red, but they fade to a lighter shade over time.
Ayurveda suggests that providing nourishment from within and proper care from outside can significantly reduce these marks or prevent their intensity. The use of natural oils and herbs is highly beneficial in this regard.
Key Ayurvedic remedies include herbs like sandalwood, vetiver (ushir), and basil. It is recommended to prepare a paste of these herbs and apply it regularly with light oil on the abdomen. Starting this care from the fourth month of pregnancy and continuing throughout the term can yield better results.
Additionally, oil or paste made from the leaves of the karanja tree is also considered helpful in maintaining skin elasticity. It nourishes the skin and reduces dryness, thereby decreasing the likelihood of stretch marks.
Ayurveda also advises against scratching the skin during pregnancy. Often, people unknowingly rub their skin, which can exacerbate stretch marks. For mild itching, using natural oils or consulting a doctor is advisable.
Moreover, a balanced diet plays a crucial role. Adequate hydration, fruits, green vegetables, and essential nutrients help keep the skin strong from within. This can further lower the chances of developing stretch marks.
However, it is essential to understand that completely preventing stretch marks is not always possible, as they are a natural part of bodily changes. Yet, with proper care, regular oil massages, and Ayurvedic remedies, they can be significantly minimized, keeping the skin healthy.
