Tensions Rise in Parliament Over Police Action Against Students in Jharkhand

New Delhi, August 11: The issue of police action against students planning to besiege the Jharkhand Assembly has ignited heated debates both on the streets and in Parliament. The Congress party is demanding a response from Home Minister Amit Shah, while the BJP has accused the opposition of politicizing the situation following the police’s crackdown on the students.

Congress MP Tariq Anwar stated that both Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should address the House. He expressed, “We expect Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Modi to appear in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This demand has been consistently raised by the opposition. I am surprised that the Prime Minister and Home Minister are hesitant to come to the Lok Sabha, which is the largest assembly in the country.”

Anwar emphasized that in a democracy, it is the responsibility of the Prime Minister, Home Minister, or any opposition leader to engage with the House. He remarked, “Everyone knows that in a democracy, whether it is the Prime Minister, Home Minister, or any opposition leader, they have certain obligations to the House, and their presence is essential.”

BJP MP Janardan Singh Sigriwal condemned the police action against students in Jharkhand. He stated, “Students are facing injustice in Jharkhand. They are peacefully protesting for their rightful demands.” Sigriwal accused the state government of using force, saying, “Despite the peaceful demonstration, the state government resorted to brutal tactics, including firing tear gas at the students. I strongly condemn the actions of the Jharkhand government. They should immediately engage in dialogue with the students and address their demands.”

BJP leader Rohan Gupta targeted the opposition, stating, “Those politicizing the students’ plight have been exposed by the students themselves. The entire nation witnessed the political games at Jantar Mantar. While students are being charged in Jharkhand, the opposition is merely issuing statements.”

He raised a critical question, “Where is Rahul Gandhi at this time? Is Jharkhand outside the country? Will mere statements suffice? Students need decisive action, not just sympathy. The BJP government has discussed every issue with the students, while the opposition has only played politics. There should be no brutality against the students.”
