Tensions Rise in Murshidabad, West Bengal: 30 Arrested Following Ram Navami Procession Violence

Kolkata, March 28: Tensions escalated in Murshidabad district, particularly in Jangipur, following a Ram Navami procession that led to violence. West Bengal police have arrested 30 individuals in connection with the unrest, as confirmed by an official on Saturday.

The situation quickly came under control due to a swift joint response from state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). However, the area resembled a war zone for a brief period.

Several individuals sustained injuries during the clashes, with some receiving treatment at a local hospital. A source from the Jangipur police district reported that after stabilizing the situation, police and CAPF teams began searching for those responsible for the violence.

From Friday evening to Saturday afternoon, 30 arrests were made. Police are also conducting search operations to apprehend additional suspects involved in the violence. Multiple FIRs have been filed regarding the incidents.

CAPF personnel are maintaining a continuous presence in the affected areas through patrols and route marches. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has requested a report from the state’s Director General of Police concerning the situation.

A district police officer noted that timely intervention, overnight patrols, and rapid arrests helped restore normalcy by Saturday morning. Shops have reopened, and life is gradually returning to normal. However, patrols and route marches continue, and prohibitory orders remain in effect to prevent gatherings exceeding the designated limits.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has blamed the ECI, asserting that the commission’s arbitrary transfers and deployments of experienced police officers contributed to the escalation of tensions in Jangipur on Friday.

During an election rally on Saturday afternoon, she stated that had there been sufficient experienced former police officers in the area, the situation might not have deteriorated to such an extent.
