Hyderabad, February 17: In the recently concluded local body elections in Telangana, the ruling Congress party achieved a significant victory, securing control over 84 out of 105 municipalities. Additionally, Congress-backed candidates won mayoral and deputy mayoral positions in six out of seven municipal corporations.
Voting took place on February 11 for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations, with results announced on February 13. However, newly elected councilors in 11 municipalities were unable to elect their chairpersons and vice-chairpersons.
The main opposition party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), managed to gain power in 17 municipalities, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won in one municipality. Independent candidates were elected as chairpersons in three municipalities.
Congress secured a clear majority in 66 municipalities, while it obtained chairperson and vice-chairperson positions in 18 other municipalities with support from other parties and independents. Notably, in two municipalities, Congress received support from the BJP. In Narsapur municipality of Medak district, the BJP backed Congress for the chairperson position, and in return, Congress assisted in electing a BJP councilor as vice-chairperson. A similar arrangement occurred in Aliyabad of Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
In Rangareddy district’s Amangal, BRS won the chairperson position with BJP’s support, while offering support to BJP for the vice-chairperson role.
Regarding municipal corporations, Congress secured both mayoral and deputy mayoral positions in Mahbubnagar, Mancherial, Nalgonda, and Ramagundam. In Kothagudem municipal corporation, CPI’s Mood Ganesh was elected as mayor, while Congress’s S. Lalitha Kumar became deputy mayor. In this 60-member corporation, both Congress and CPI received 22 seats each.
In Nizamabad municipal corporation, Congress’s K. Uma Rani was elected mayor with support from AIMIM, while AIMIM’s Salma Tahseen became deputy mayor. This success helped Congress prevent the BJP from emerging as the largest party.
However, in Karimnagar municipal corporation, Congress could not stop the BJP. The BJP, which won 30 seats with independent support, secured both the mayoral and deputy mayoral positions in the 66-member corporation.
In Adilabad municipality, independent councilor Bandari Anusha was elected chairperson, while AIMIM’s Mohammad Rohit became vice-chairperson. Here, the BJP emerged as the largest party with 21 seats, while Congress secured 11, and BRS and AIMIM received six seats each. Five independents were also elected. In Bhainsa municipality, independents won both the chairperson and vice-chairperson positions.
