Madurai, May 27: The political climate in Tamil Nadu has intensified following the violence in Kunnam, located in the Perambalur district. Vanni Arasu, the Deputy General Secretary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the state’s Minister for Social Justice, condemned the incident, emphasizing that politics in the state should remain civil and democratic.
Arasu arrived at Madurai Airport on his way to his home district of Virudhunagar from Chennai, where he received a warm welcome from VCK supporters. They presented him with shawls, flower garlands, and bouquets. However, a minor commotion occurred as supporters vied to honor him.
In a media interaction, Arasu referred to the Kunnam violence as completely unacceptable, stating it should not have happened. He mentioned that a protest had initially been planned at the district level but was later canceled by party leadership, deeming it unnecessary. Nonetheless, some activists were unaware of this change and arrived at the venue.
Arasu accused DMK workers of attacking VCK supporters with stones and exhibiting violent behavior. He reiterated that party leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has always opposed violence in politics and has never allowed it in political activities.
The minister also highlighted the long-standing political relationship between VCK and DMK, expressing confusion over the dissatisfaction of some DMK leaders.
Regarding the Mekedatu dam project in Karnataka, Arasu reiterated his party’s opposition, stating that it is against the interests of farmers. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to convene an all-party meeting on this issue.
Addressing concerns about law and order, he stated that the new government should be given some time to stabilize the situation. He also called for stringent measures to protect marginalized communities, urging the police to operate above caste and religion, and reiterated the need for a separate law to prevent honor killings.
