Tamil Nadu Increases Dearness Allowance for State Employees to 63%

Tamil Nadu raises the dearness allowance for state employees and pensioners to 63%, effective July 1, 2026, benefiting 1.6 million people.

Chennai, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a three percent increase in the dearness allowance for government employees and teachers, raising it from 60 percent to 63 percent. This adjustment, effective retroactively from July 1, 2026, was made public ahead of the Diwali festival and will also benefit pensioners and family pensioners.

According to a government notification, approximately 1.6 million employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners will receive this increase. The state government anticipates an additional annual expenditure of ₹1,858 crore as a result of this decision. The government has committed to allocating the necessary funds to implement this amendment, underscoring its dedication to the welfare of both active and retired personnel.

This decision follows a similar increase announced by the central government, which raised the dearness allowance for its employees from 60 percent to 63 percent, effective July 1. Tamil Nadu has aligned its rates and effective date with this central announcement.

The notification also highlighted the significant contributions of government officials and teachers in the creation and implementation of welfare programs. It noted their essential role in ensuring the effective execution of initiatives aimed at public welfare.

In its announcement, the government emphasized that state employees and teachers are key partners in planning and executing these programs. Recognizing these responsibilities and prioritizing employee welfare, the Chief Minister decided to implement the increase in response to the central government’s announcement.

The notification stressed the inclusion of pensioners and family pensioners among the beneficiaries, reflecting the government’s concern for all four groups mentioned in the financial commitment.

With the festive season approaching, the government stated that this increase would help beneficiaries celebrate Diwali with greater joy. While the revised allowance is retroactively effective from July, the notification did not specify when the arrears would be paid. It confirmed the effective date, the revised rate, the estimated number of beneficiaries, and the recurring annual expenditure that the state will incur due to this decision.
